As the scientific study of language, linguistics is the foundation of all language study, language development and human communication as a whole. A BA in General Linguistics is required for the theoretical development of theories underlying the study of any language. The development of the Phonetics, Phonology, and Syntax cannot generally be accomplished without concrete training in the field of General Linguistics. As such, this BA programme is most relevant in the description of African languages.

General introduction, definition of key terms, difference between bilingualism and multilingualism, the development of bilingualism and multingualism, challenges faced by a bilingual /multilingual speakers, speech community, continuous assessment, the role of language in society, the bilingual/multilingual classroom, forms of multilingualism, importance of bilingualism/multilingualism to an individual and to the community.
